Do Cavoodles Have Health Problems? A Comprehensive Guide for Potential Owners
Cavooldes, are small and popular designer dogs that are a mix between Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles. These curly pups are gorgeous, playful, and thrive in the family environment. Although, before you decide to adopt one, it's important to know of any potential health issues that may arise.
1. Common Health Issues
Our Cavooldes here at Theodorables and Co- Cavooldes and Theodores, are all genetically tested and will not suffer from any of the diseases that are testable through a DNA test. However, although not breed-specific, 50 % of all small dogs will suffer from what is known as “Patella Luxation”. This is a condition where the kneecaps slide out of place. This condition can cause lameness and pain and can be managed with proper treatment which is often surgery. While neither of the parent dogs we breed from have this, it may pop up from time to time. Does this mean your puppy will require surgery? No. Cavooldes rarely weigh enough for patella movement to become an issue. Unless your dog has significant lameness issues that affect their quality of life, risk versus benefit for patella luxation surgery is often not the surgical route. We recommend always getting a second opinion if your dog has patella movement, although is not lame and a vet recommends surgery.
2. Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a condition that affects many dog breeds, and Cavoodles are no exception. This condition causes the hip joint to develop abnormally, making it loose and prone to being dislocated. Hip dysplasia can cause joint pain and arthritis, among other things. However, you can lower the risk of your Cavoodle developing this condition through desexing after 6 months of age and their growth plates have closed, proper nutrition, exercise, and regular check-ups by your veterinarian.
3. Allergic Reactions
Some Cavoodles have sensitive skin that can cause allergic reactions to certain foods, environmental factors, or insects. Allergies can manifest in various ways, including itching, rashes, and hives. It's important to visit the vet if you notice any symptoms of an allergic reaction to determine the allergen. Once you know what triggers your Cavoodle's allergies, you can prevent them from coming into contact with the allergen, making them less susceptible to developing health problems.
4. Eye Issues
Again, not breed-specific, although common in long-haired dogs are certain eye conditions. Cataracts, for example, are common and can cause blurred vision, in older age. Additionally, Epiphora is a condition that makes excessive tears flow out of the eyes, leading to tear stains around the eye area. Proper eye care, including cleaning and grooming the hair away from the eyes can help prevent such eye issues.
